Golden Bay is relatively isolated and therefore takes a bit more time and effort to travel here. But you’ll discover a destination that’s unsurpassed in its pristine beauty and you’ll soon come to appreciate why Golden Bay is such a special place.
By car
From the North Island
Two car ferries ply between Wellington and Picton.
The InterIsland Line and
The BlueBridge Ferry both with a 3 hour sailing time.
From Picton you’re faced with a choice of two different routes to travel to Nelson and onto Golden Bay. The direct route takes just less than 4 hours to drive and the scenic route through the Queen Charlotte Sounds takes an extra hour.
From Christchurch the most direct route is north to Amberley and through the Lewis Pass to Murchison. Then head towards Nelson and watch for the turnoff to Motueka where you can join Highway 60 to Golden Bay. You should allow 7 hours driving time.
An alternative route is to travel up the east coast to Kaikoura and on to Blenheim. From here you head west to Nelson, Motueka and over the "Marble Mountain" to Golden Bay. Cars can be rented from about NZ$27 per day at all the major airports and at the ferry terminal in Picton for example:-Ace Car Rentals or within New Zealand call 0800 502 277 or 1800 140 026 from Australia.
