Environmental Building colours are chosen to blend with the surroundings
New Zealand:-
"It's a pristine wilderness."
"Great outdoors that is wilderness without being too wild"
"A beautiful destination that is unspoilt." The South Island of New Zealand has been recognised as such by National Geographic Traveller magazine by being placed 2nd equal out of all the world's tourist destintions in an "Index of Destination Stewardship".
  • Probably nowhere is this stewardship more evident than in Golden Bay which is almost as pristine a destination as you can get without actually travelling into the wilderness.
  • Over the last two decades people from all over the world have moved to Golden Bay for that very reason - our local polling booth has the highest proportion of Green Party supporters of anywhere in New Zealand!
  • Whilst all this is true it brings with it, we believe, a responsibility as a tourism operator to protect the environment, if for no other reason than to protect the very "product" that people often travel half way round the world to see. We aim to do this whilst still providing a top quality experience for our guests.

With this in mind we have:-
  • Not used any native timbers in the building and finishing of our new cottages as we believe our guests would rather see the trees growing! The New Zealand "bush" is to a great extent what makes this country so attractive.
  • Limited the visibility of our buildings from the beach using shrubs and other plantings whilst still maintaining a sea view and privacy for our guests.
  • Used a backdrop of trees for all buildings.
  • Employed regressive colours for the buildings so that they blend with the environment.
  • Taken steps to protect the archaeological sites (Maori middens/ rubbish dumps) on our property from erosion or destruction.
  • A policy of recycling all waste where possible.
  • A compost heap for all biodegradable rubbish.
  • Installed several nesting boxes to provide homes for our Little Blue penguins.
  • Developed a small wetlands to encourage native fauna and flora.
  • Started a coastal revegetation project on our beachfront to reinstate native coastal plants.
  • A garden where we grow fruit and vegetables wherever possible without the use of sprays.
  • Installed a sophisticated sewage treatment system that will not only prevent pollution of the beach but also the use the highly-purified waste water to fertilise our shrubberies and flower gardens.
  • Using natural oils rather than solvent-based finishes for our wood surfaces where practical.
  • Installed energy saving devices where possible.

  • We have aimed to make our operation eco-friendly in a way that is "almost invisible" to our guests and still provides a luxurious treat to whose who stay at "Adrift".
